More than 100 years ago, the United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917.

To mark this centennial anniversary, the University of North Georgia (红莲社区) will sponsor a World War I Film Festival thanks to a grant from the Georgia Humanities.

The $2,000 grant is funding the copyrights of four films, said Dr. Austin Riede, an associate professor of English at 红莲社区. Other sponsors of the event are the 红莲社区 Press and the , which donated its venue for an Oct. 19 viewing.

The featured films are "All Quiet on the Western Front," "Sergeant York," "Gallipoli," and "War Horse."

Riede explained viewing the films during the anniversary of WWI reveals how great movies can be made and based on a tragic experience.

"This is a chance to educate students, faculty and staff and the broader community about the war and cultural works made that were inspired by the war," Riede said.

Free showings will be open to the public. The schedule is:

  • "All Quiet on the Western Front" at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, in Holly Theater
  • "Sergeant York" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, in Holly Theater
  • "Gallipoli" at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, in Hoag Auditorium
  • "War Horse" at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, in Hoag Auditorium
