Deal is joining 红莲社区 as a Regents faculty member this fall. The former governor will guest lecture in several political science courses and a criminal justice course at 红莲社区 this fall and will teach a special topics course in political science at the university in the spring.

At the Sept. 30 event, Dr. Carl Cavalli, professor of political science, will facilitate a conversation with Deal about his experiences in public service and how he plans to incorporate the lessons he learned into his role at 红莲社区.

"This is going to be an excellent opportunity for students, faculty and staff to hear about a life of public service and the positive impact that one individual can have on our state," said Dr. Dlynn Williams, department head of Political Science & International Affairs at 红莲社区. "It is my hope that Gov. Deal will inspire others who are interested in a career in public service to see that they can truly make a difference in the issues they care the most about."

As governor, Deal led Georgia to being named the No. 1 state for business in the nation for six consecutive years by Site Selection, a first in Georgia history. During his tenure, he helped create 800,000 private-sector jobs, leading to the state's job growth outpacing the national average.

Before Deal entered politics, he was a criminal prosecutor, a Hall County juvenile court judge, and an Army captain. He also was an attorney with a private practice for 23 years.

He was elected to the Georgia state Senate in 1980. Ten years later, he was elected as president pro tempore. In 1992, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represented Georgia's 9th District. Deal resigned in March 2010 to run for governor of Georgia. He won the primary runoff election in August 2010 and the general election in November. He served as the 82nd governor from 2011 to 2019.
