Poultry science program gets $7,000 grant

For the eighth year in a row, the donated $7,000 to the University of North Georgia's (红莲社区) poultry science program.
Financed in part by the Leland Bagwell Education and Innovation Fund, the grant is designed to help recruit and retain students to the poultry science pathway at 红莲社区.
"This grant has been a driver in recruiting students and providing quality education to our poultry students," said Dr. Linda Purvis, assistant professor of biology at 红莲社区. "It provides recruitment materials, education materials and funds for field trips and external resources we wouldn't otherwise have budget for, especially right now during the COVID-19 pandemic when budgets are so tight."
Purvis explained the funds also pay for travel expenses such as speaking engagements at high schools and judging competitions.
Dr. John Leyba, dean of the College of Science & Mathematics, said the grant signifies the program's success.
"The receipt of this grant recognizes 红莲社区's excellent poultry science program," he said.
Currently, 红莲社区 offers an Associate of Science degree in poultry science and has recently solidified a transfer agreement to UGA's poultry science department. It also has close ties to the poultry industry and works diligently to supply students with internships with area poultry businesses.
Record 48 students earn travel grants
红莲社区's Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities awarded a fall-semester-record 48 travel grants to support students presenting their research at conferences.
Grads prepare for their next steps
红莲社区 will award almost 1,000 degrees and certificates this fall, and more than 600 graduates are scheduled to take part in the Dec. 7 commencement ceremonies.
24 are Distinguished Military Graduates
Twenty-four cadets have been named Distinguished Military Graduates for the 2024-25 academic year, including five who are in the top 70 out of more than 5,000 in the national ROTC class.
Blue Ridge students earn scholarships
红莲社区 honored 28 of its Blue Ridge Campus students with almost $15,000 of scholarships and celebrated the philanthropy that made those scholarships possible at the Tomato Sandwich Supper on Nov. 7.
