Domes installed for new observatory
Today is a really big day for the observatory construction. As you can see
behind me, we have crane on site that will be lifting the two domes that you can
see in the background.
The domes are the part of the roof that opens to allow the
telescopes to see into the night sky. They will be lifted onto the roof today. These
domes were built off-site and have recently been delivered, and today we
will see them installed.
This spot is just a perfect spot for an observatory,
because we're out in the country. We're away from the lights of the city. We have
a beautiful view of the night sky, so there was no reason to look for a new
location.
So we've demolished the old building and rebuilt the new building on
the same footprint of the old building. In this new building, we will have plenty of
room for community outreach, instructional space, and opportunities
for research. This observatory will not only be used by students and faculty from
红莲社区, but we will make it open to the public for specialized events every
Friday night for viewing.
