At the ACTT Center (Gainesville) and the LTC (Oconee), staff monitor make-up tests for students who miss a test in class, as well as tests for students needing extra time or other considerations resulting from a properly diagnosed need. Instructors will need to complete a test referral form for each student’s make-up: (login required) (login required) Testing Referral Form (PDF) (paper version)FAQs

Effectiveness
Training
Tutoring Services pursues rigorous training to ensure that students can achieve academic success through sessions and consultations.
All of our peer tutors and consultants undergo training that has been Level 1 certified under the . Our training program meets four requirements for certification:
- Sound hiring practices: we solicit applications from students earning an A or B in their content area and interview for content knowledge and interpersonal ability.
- Planned training experience: our training module, which covers tutoring and learning concepts, takes at least ten hours; regular meetings and start-of-semester training frequently supplement core training.
- Tutoring experience: tutors accrue a minimum of 25 hours of tutoring experience in their first weeks of work.
- Regular evaluation by a knowledgeable and experienced evaluator: tutors are observed in both formal and informal ways.
Satisfaction
Our services are highly rated by students, with 97% of them rating their tutoring sessions as very good or excellent. Former Director Hieu Huynh won the 2018 Eleanor Crawford Award and Interim Director Jonathan Barefield won the 2019 Eleanor Crawford Award for dedication and effectiveness at serving students.
Performance
The tutoring services model has developed over decades of practice and research at universities around the world. Both peer (student) tutor and professional tutor services help students master skills that they are learning in their courses.
Tutors and consultants alike encourage positive learning mindsets like growth mindset (seeing challenges as a springboard for future success) and metacognition (the ability to reflect on one’s own thinking). They also provide useful perspectives as a content expert who isn’t also responsible for grading a student’s work. Their goal is to help a student succeed.
Students who visit a tutor or consultant tend to pass their courses at a higher rate and tend to improve their GPA more compared to their non-attending classmates. For example, students in ENGL 1101 who visit the writing center have a 15% higher pass rate compared to their peers, and people in College Algebra have a 22% higher pass rate when they visit the ACTT Center for math tutoring. (Data is from academic year 2017-2018.)
We serve everyone. For instance, these benefits accrue for students regardless of their abilities. A highly-performing writer may benefit from a brainstorming consultation with a Writing Center consultant; a highly-competent math student may need just a little input to get help on a sticky Calculus problem.
